Ruto Approves Renaming of Talanta Stadium After Raila Odinga

President William Ruto has confirmed that Talanta Stadium, currently under construction, will be renamed the Raila Odinga International Stadium once completed, in recognition of the late former prime minister’s legacy.

The announcement comes after public calls, notably from Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja during the 62nd Jamhuri Day celebrations at Nyayo National Stadium, where he urged the President to consider naming the stadium after Odinga. The crowd responded enthusiastically to the suggestion, prompting Ruto to affirm his support for the proposal.

In his remarks, President Ruto acknowledged the public’s wishes, stating, “You have said that we should rename it to Raila Amolo Odinga International Stadium. I have heard you, and as soon as we are done, we will do that.” The President’s statement indicated the government’s intention to proceed with the change.

The renaming of a public facility like Talanta Stadium requires a formal process. The proposal, initially made by Governor Sakaja, will be reviewed by relevant government ministries, including Sports, Lands, and Public Works. Once the review is complete, the Cabinet and the President will give final approval.

After approval, public consultations and stakeholder engagement will be conducted to ensure broad support and address any concerns. Legal checks will also be carried out to confirm compliance with regulations governing public assets.

Once the renaming is finalised, a gazette notice will be issued, and physical changes, such as updated signage and digital records, will be implemented. A ceremonial unveiling will follow, likely attended by the President and other dignitaries.
