During Namibia’s War of Independence, the Soviet Union provided significant aid to the People’s Liberation Army of Namibia and trained SWAPO leaders.
In 1990, the Soviet Union (later Russia) established diplomatic relations with Namibia.
Russian Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Trutnev is in Namibia for a working visit, where he is scheduled to meet with Namibian leaders, including Minister of International Relations and Trade Selma Ashipala-Musavi, to discuss opportunities for enhanced
Russian-Namibian economic cooperation.
Upon arriving in Windhoek, Trutnev laid a wreath at the Heroes’ Acre memorial and Eternal Flame, honoring Namibian patriots, and laid flowers at the graves of former Presidents Sam Nujoma and Hage Geingob.
Trutnev recalled meeting Nujoma, Namibia’s first president and leader of its liberation struggle, over 20 years ago.
The Russian official highlighted Nujoma’s appreciation for the Soviet Union’s support and explained that this visit served as an opportunity to pay respects, as he was unable to attend Nujoma’s funeral.
