Petrol cost shoots up as Diesel decreases

, NAIROBI, Kenya Jan 14 – The price of super petrol has increased by Sh 1.81 per litre in the latest monthly review by the Energy Regulatory Commission released on Saturday.

Diesel and Kerosene have dropped by Sh2.99 and Sh0.12 respectively.

The new prices will take effect from Saturday midnight and will remain in force until the next price review expected on February 14th.

ERC has urged oil marketing companies to compete below the maximum calculated prices.

The Commission said the changes in the January prices were a consequence of the average landed cost of imported Super Petrol increasing from US$ 503.93 (Sh52,333.13) per ton in November 2016 to US$ 530.24 (55,065.42) per ton in December 2016 according to ERC.

The average landed cost of Diesel decreased from US$ 478.11 (Sh49,651.72 ) per ton to US$ 446.84 (Sh46,404.33)per ton while that of Kerosene decreased from US$ 500.45 (Sh51,971.73) per ton to US$ 487.91 (Sh50,669.45)per ton.

Over the same period, ERC said, the mean monthly US Dollar to Kenya Shilling exchange rate remained fairly stable at Sh102.41 per US$ in December 2016, compared to Sh101.86 per US$ in November 2016.

Following the changes, super petrol will cost Sh92.6 in Mombasa, Diesel Sh80.85 while kerosene will cost Sh60.6 in Nairobi, Super Petrol will cost Sh96.01, Diesel Sh84.23 and Kerosene Sh63.44.

In Marsabit, Super Petrol will cost Sh102.92, Diesel Sh91.14 and kerosene Sh70.35.
