Mystery Surrounds Death of 14-Year-Old Student in Nakuru

A 14-year-old pupil, Moses Joseph Onyoni, collapsed and died at Moi Comprehensive School in Nakuru City on Monday morning.
Onyoni, a Grade Eight student, had left home in good health, according to his mother, Lillian Moraa, who prepared him for school and saw him off on the bus. Hours later, the school contacted her, saying that her son was unwell. By the time she arrived at the hospital, he had already been pronounced dead.
The circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear. Teachers informed the family that Onyoni had been interacting with classmates before collapsing near a wall when called to the front of the class. Some reports suggest he fainted, while relatives have heard conflicting accounts, including claims of punishment. His aunt, Doreen Nyanchama, expressed confusion over the differing stories and called for a full investigation.
The uncertainty has sparked anger among parents, leading to a disruption in school activities as crowds gathered to demand answers. In an intense turn of events, parents removed the boy’s body from the hospital and brought it back to the school grounds, insisting on greater transparency from the administration. Police were later dispatched to restore order and transfer the body to the mortuary.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. Victoria Mulili, the Nakuru County Director of Education, confirmed that education officials had visited the school to gather information. Hospital officials said that a post-mortem examination will determine the cause of death.
