Kenya Airways Pilot Dies After Reported Altercation, Murder Investigation Underway

Detectives are investigating the death of Kenya Airways pilot Kelvin Wachira, who died after he was found unconscious near the entrance of Nairobi West Prison along Lang’ata Road in Nairobi.

According to police, Wachira was admitted to Mbagathi Hospital on July 19 after an officer attached to Prison Headquarters found him lying unconscious outside the prison entrance while heading home. Despite efforts to save his life, he died the following day while undergoing treatment.

His body was later transferred to the Kenyatta University Funeral Home for a postmortem examination.

The postmortem, conducted on July 22 in the presence of police officers, concluded that Wachira had suffered a head injury consistent with blunt force trauma, leading investigators to classify the case as a murder.

Preliminary investigations indicate that Wachira had visited the Nairobi West Prison officers’ mess at around 3 p.m. on July 19, where he had reportedly gone to have drinks with friends.

Police say an altercation broke out between Wachira and several individuals at the officers’ mess. A waiter later escorted him to his white Mercedes-Benz, which remained parked inside the prison compound.

Investigators believe Wachira later left his vehicle under circumstances that remain unclear before he was found unconscious outside the prison entrance. His Mercedes-Benz was still parked inside Nairobi West Prison after the incident and was later moved to the local police station as part of the investigation.

Officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Lang’ata have since taken over the case. Detectives are interviewing witnesses, reviewing security camera footage, and working to establish exactly what happened during and after the reported altercation.
