Mudavadi Warns UDA Leaders of Fierce 2027 Nomination Battles

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has warned United Democratic Alliance (UDA) leaders to brace for fierce competition in the party’s 2027 nominations, with over 3,800 aspirants vying for various positions.
Speaking at State House in Nairobi during a National Governing Council meeting led by President William Ruto, Mudavadi highlighted the intense level of competition, particularly at the grassroots level. More than 640 individuals are seeking parliamentary tickets, 64 are running for governor, 98 for Senate, 138 for woman representative, and 2,863 are competing for MCA positions.
Mudavadi cautioned current officeholders that the high number of applicants signals a tough race, urging them not to underestimate the mobilisation efforts of their opponents.
“You cannot afford to lie low when party polling centre elections take place in March,” he said, noting that aspirants are already building their campaign teams.
The Prime CS also revealed that UDA will hold a major forum on 4 February 2026 to engage with aspirants and outline its strategy for the 2027 election. Mudavadi emphasised the importance of thorough mobilisation, particularly in MCA contests, warning that complacency could lead to electoral defeat.
Alongside domestic political concerns, Mudavadi pointed to Kenya’s rising international profile, citing the country’s success in hosting major diplomatic events, such as the upcoming Africa–France Summit in May. In his remarks, President Ruto reaffirmed his goal of securing a decisive victory in 2027.
He said UDA is working to expand its political base, including strengthening its alliance with the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), in preparation for a possible coalition. Ruto outlined his target of securing a margin of two to three million votes, compared to the narrow 200,000-vote lead he secured in the previous election.
