Kenya Airways has confirmed that one of its flights en route from Nairobi to New York was forced to turn back due to a technical issue mid-flight. Flight KQ 002D experienced a flight control spoiler malfunction while flying over Chad on July 5, 2026, at approximately 19:50 hours.
According to the airline, the crew promptly followed standard safety procedures, conducting the necessary checks before making the decision to return to Nairobi as a precautionary measure. The move was aimed at ensuring the safety of all passengers and crew on board.
The aircraft is expected to land safely back in Nairobi on July 6 at around 00:30 hours local time. Kenya Airways has apologized for the inconvenience caused and reassured customers that safety remains its highest priority.
Affected passengers will be assisted with alternative travel arrangements, with the airline working to place them on the next available flights as soon as possible.
The airline also noted that spoiler malfunctions are rare occurrences but can impact aircraft performance by increasing drag and fuel consumption.
