KPA Equips First Berth In Preparation of Launch
The Kenya Ports Authority is equipping the first berth of the Lamu Port in preparation for its launch. In July, the authority called for a supply of three six-tonne and two-five tonne forklifts to start operations.
At the same time, the administration arranged a reconnaissance for shipping lines’ executives to the site to cement investor confidence.
According to KPA General Manager Corporate services, the authority is moving equipment to support the operations.
“We are preparing to move equipment to support operations at the first berth which is ready,” he added
Some of the equipment include Rubber-Tyred Gantry Cranes, Terminal Contractors, Forklifts, and Pilot boats. Further, KPA is also installing a navigation aid at the port.
In addition, KPA plans to use the Lamu port for transshipment. In this regard, the port has extended a 30-day storage free period for the transshipment of cargo coming through Lamu.
Furthermore, The Star posits that KPA will offer 14 days free period for domestic shipment and 40 percent off for cargo based charges.
“We are going to promote Lamu as a transshipment port. We continue talking to shipping lines, and some vessels have shown interest to come and use Lamu for Ethiopia destined cargo,” KPA managing director Daniel Manduku told The Star.
