KMTC in Talks With Canada to Create Jobs for Kenyan Health Graduates

Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) has opened formal discussions with Canadian authorities aimed at creating employment pathways for its graduates in Canada, particularly in the field of health care assistance.

The talks were initiated following a visit by a Canadian delegation on 10 March, organised through Kenya’s Ministry of Labour and Social Protection. This marked the second engagement between the two parties.

Central to the discussions were issues of workforce alignment, recruitment procedures, and the compatibility of training standards across the two countries.

Representing KMTC’s chief executive, Lucy Chebungei, Director of Finance, Planning, and Administration, welcomed the delegation and emphasised the college’s commitment to international collaboration.

“KMTC remains a key contributor to the healthcare workforce both locally and globally, producing competent professionals who serve in diverse health systems across the world,” she noted.

The timing of the negotiations is significant. More than 22,000 KMTC graduates are poised to enter the healthcare sector this year, at a moment when global demand for skilled carers is intensifying. For Kenya, the prospect of international placements not only offers career opportunities for its graduates but also positions the country as a contributor to addressing worldwide shortages in health care staffing.

The Canadian team, led by Lara Dyer, focused its evaluation on whether KMTC’s Health Care Assistant curriculum meets the professional benchmarks required in Canada. Their review examined course content, training structures, and practical competencies to determine if graduates could integrate into Canadian care facilities without extensive retraining.
