Kenyans Abroad Mourn Uber Driver Killed in Louisiana as Family Starts Repatriation

A Kenyan ride-share driver, Frederick Kiprono, was shot and killed in Shreveport, Louisiana, and police are investigating the incident.
Kiprono, originally from Moiben in Uasin Gishu County, had lived in the United States for several years and was known for his steady work and commitment to supporting his family both in Kenya and abroad. News of his death has left relatives and Kenyan communities in North America and at home in deep shock as they prepare for his burial.
His immediate family includes his sister Everlyn Cheruto in Kentucky, his brother William Songok in Kenya, cousins in Texas and Indiana, and nieces in Shreveport. Gotabgaa International Inc., the global organisation representing the Kalenjin diaspora, confirmed the death in a statement issued by its president, Janeth Ngeno-Rutto.
The organisation conveyed its condolences and called for collective support to help the family manage the emotional and financial burden. Ngeno-Rutto appealed for prayers, solidarity, and contributions to ensure Kiprono receives a dignified farewell.
Repatriating his body to Kenya is already underway, but the process involves significant costs, including funeral home fees, documentation, and international transport. Gotabgaa International has activated its chapters across North America to coordinate fundraising efforts, while relatives in Kenya prepare to receive the remains.
Virtual meetings have been held to organise contributions and assist the family during this period. For members of the diaspora, Kiprono’s death highlights the risks faced by immigrant workers striving to build stable lives while supporting families across borders.
Community representatives noted that the loss is felt widely, reflecting the shared experiences of many Kenyans living abroad. Gotabgaa International thanked those who have offered condolences and financial assistance, saying that each contribution helps ease the family’s burden as investigations continue.
