Kenyan Teen Arrested in US Over Alleged Child Abuse Images

A 19-year-old Kenyan national has been arrested in Maryland on charges of possessing child sexual abuse material.

Reyvon Macharia was taken into custody on 12 February after investigators executed a search warrant at his home in Frederick. He faces eight counts of possession of child pornography.

Detectives acted on a tip received by the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office regarding illicit material shared online. The account was traced to Macharia, leading to the seizure of several electronic devices. He was transported to the Frederick County Adult Detention Center, where he remains in custody as the investigation continues.

In Minnesota, another 19-year-old Kenyan student, Brian Muinde Kimithi, has been charged with first-degree criminal sexual conduct. Authorities allege that Kimithi assaulted a woman in St Joseph city. Court records show he was a student at St John’s University and a member of the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC). He was arrested following the complaint.

During his first court appearance, Judge William Cashman set bail at $400,000, with the option of a reduced $200,000 bond under strict conditions. These include restrictions on travel and contact with the alleged victim. If convicted, Kimithi could face up to 30 years in prison.

These cases follow a 2024 conviction in Arizona, where Kenyan national Brian Kibiwot Chuchuney was sentenced to 20 years in prison for sexually assaulting a 70-year-old woman. Prosecutors said Chuchuney, who was homeless and undocumented at the time, posed a serious threat to public safety. His sentence included prison time for kidnapping and lifetime supervised probation for attempted sexual assault.
