Kenyan Man Stranded in Cambodia After Falling Victim to Fake Job

Evans Kyalo Musembi, a 24-year-old Kenyan, is stranded in Cambodia after travelling there for a job that did not exist.
Musembi left Kenya in November 2024 after securing what he believed was a position as a hotel receptionist. The offer, which he found online, appeared credible and promised stable employment and an opportunity to support his family in Kitui County. However, on arrival, he discovered that the role was fraudulent.
Instead of formal employment, he was drawn into a crypto scam operation reportedly run by Chinese nationals. Such schemes have increasingly targd foreign job seekers across parts of Asia. His situation worsened when Cambodian authorities intensified efforts to shut down illegal operations.
The company responsible for his relocation collapsed, leaving him without work, income, or support. For the past month, Musembi has been living in a small hotel, often without sufficient food due to a lack of funds. He said he only realised the nature of the situation after it was too late to leave. He remains unable to secure a return to Kenya.
The experience has affected his mental wellbeing and placed financial strain on his family. His parents have been sending small amounts of money to support him, despite facing their own financial difficulties. According to Musembi, their efforts are no longer sustainable.
He is now appealing to Kenyan authorities and members of the public for assistance to return home. His priority is to reunite with his family and recover from the experience.
Musembi can be contacted on +254 759 973713 by those willing to assist with his return to Kenya.
