Kenyan Man in US Recalls Selling Ram for KSh7,500 to Get His First Passport
Peter Njenga, a journalist now based in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, sold a family ram in 2017 to raise money for a passport, a decision that ultimately enabled him to pursue opportunities abroad.
Njenga recalls that the choice followed a sermon in his local church urging congregants to prepare for potential international opportunities. At the time, he had no funds for a passport but he understood that faith alone would not suffice, he needed to act. With the modest support of his mother, who had helped him raise a ram, Njenga sold the animal for KSh 7,500, the exact amount required for the application.
Reflecting on the moment, Njenga describes the sale as a turning point. “What looked like a small step of faith at the time later became the key that opened the next chapter of my life,” he said.
Years later, he shared a photograph of the ram as a reminder of the sacrifice that enabled his journey. His mother’s quiet support and his willingness to part with something valuable show how small decisions can have far-reaching consequences.
He advises: “Do not wait until opportunities come before you prepare for them. Sometimes doors open for those who are already ready to walk through them.”
