Kenyan Journalist Relocates to UK, Embraces New Life in Nottingham

John Mwangi, a former Kenyan journalist, has settled in Nottingham, United Kingdom, reuniting with his family and embracing a new chapter in his life.

Mwangi, who spent over 15 years in Kenya’s media industry, said his relocation was prompted by his wife, who moved to the UK first. “It is my wife who brought me here. She was the first to travel, and I followed her after six months… I can confidently say I am a happy man. I do not regret it at all,” he said. Despite his satisfaction, Mwangi acknowledges that adapting to life in a new country posed challenges. He cited cultural differences and navigating unfamiliar legal systems as areas that required patience and careful adjustment.

He emphasised that understanding local laws and systems is essential for anyone relocating abroad, and that mindset and family support are key to overcoming initial difficulties. Parenting has been a particular challenge for Mwangi.

He noted that raising children in the UK differs significantly from his experience in Kenya, requiring changes in expectations and approach. Nevertheless, he describes the move as a positive turning point in his life.

In addition to family life, Mwangi has engaged in digital content creation. He runs a YouTube channel, John Daniels 254, documenting his experiences across UK cities, and has expanded to TikTok. He regards these platforms as both creative outlets and spaces to share his journey with a wider audience.

His experiences have prompted discussion online, with users sharing encouragement and personal comparisons. Some noted the complexities of cross-cultural parenting, while others highlighted the importance of realistic expectations when moving abroad.
