Kenya in talks to export tea to Chinese market

The State is currently negotiating an export deal with buyers from China, which will see approximately five million kilograms of specialty teas exported to China in a span of the next three years.

Speaking during a meeting with a delegation from China, Mwangi Kiunjuri, CS for agriculture, livestock and fisheries, said the deal will be a boost for Kenyan farmers because they will earn close to Sh 7 billion shillings, estimated to increase to 40 billion shillings in a span of ten years.

“We believe a partnership with Chinese companies will lead to growth of the purple tea market segment. It is our desire to pursue enhanced access to Chinese market for tea products,” said Kiunjuri.

Fuzhou Benny Tea Industry Company limited, the Chinese based firm, is set to market the Kenyan purple tea through an electronic trading platform, alongside providing machinery and expertise to five tea processing factories that will be involved in the deal.

The deal will also open the Chinese market to more Kenyan products.

Kenya’s current tea exports stand at 31.37 billion shillings, having declined from 40.09 billion shillings.
