Kenya Airways staff trained to identify human trafficking victims

The UN Migration Agency says 100 victims of human trafficking were identified over the past year, thanks to a programme that trains Kenya Airways staff to spot suspicious activity.

Sharif Faisal, Head of Programmes and Policy Development at IOM Kenya, says the initiative will be expanded to include staff from other airlines, as Kenya continues to serve as a regional travel hub.

“Nairobi is a travel hub and therefore it is particularly susceptible to trafficking. Other airlines are also keen to have us train their staff,” said Sharif.

IOM Kenya adds that it is working with the Ministry of Labour to promote the adoption of its ethical recruitment initiative, IRIS, aimed at curbing unscrupulous recruiters in the country.
