Kalonzo Musyoka to attend 2026 U.S. National Prayer Breakfast, a global gathering of leaders

Kenyan political leader Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka, the leader of the Wiper Democratic Movement and former vice president, is set to travel to the United States in 2026 to attend the annual National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, D.C., scheduled for February 5, 2026.

The event is strictly invitation-only, bringing together select political leaders, faith figures, and diplomats from around the world. Musyoka’s invitation reflects his long-standing role in both Kenyan and international political circles. During his U.S. trip, he is also expected to engage with Kenyan diaspora communities in Maryland and Virginia, strengthening ties between Kenyan leaders and citizens living abroad.

The National Prayer Breakfast has a long and rich history. It began in 1953 when members of the U.S. Congress invited President Dwight D. Eisenhower to a breakfast centered on prayer and fellowship. Its origins trace even further back to the 1930s, when Abraham Vereide, a Norwegian-born Methodist minister, organized prayer groups, believing that shared prayer could unite people across political and cultural divides. Since its inception, the breakfast has become a respected fixture in U.S. political and spiritual life, with leaders from more than 100 countries participating over the decades. It provides a space for dialogue, reflection, and informal diplomacy that goes beyond traditional state visits.

Originally hosted by members of Congress with support from The Fellowship Foundation, the event is now coordinated in partnership with the National Prayer Breakfast Foundation, which manages the program, guest list, and overall logistics.

The breakfast maintains its focus on spiritual fellowship while also providing opportunities for international networking among leaders and influencers. Attendance is not open to the general public, as the gathering is limited to political leaders, invited global dignitaries, selected religious figures, and special guests. Even media coverage is restricted, emphasizing the exclusive and intimate nature of the event. It is designed as a forum for prayer, fellowship, and dialogue rather than a public worship service.

Beyond its spiritual focus, the National Prayer Breakfast offers a unique platform for leaders to connect across political and cultural lines, fostering relationships, encouraging dialogue, and reflecting on values that guide both governance and diplomacy. Musyoka’s participation in 2026 continues Kenya’s tradition of engaging with this global forum, highlighting the country’s presence on the international stage while connecting with Kenyan communities abroad in Maryland and Virginia, as well as attending the high-profile gathering in Washington, D.C.
