JKIA Airspace Shut Down

The Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) has temporarily closed its airspace, and no aircraft will be allowed to take off or land until further notice.
The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) announces a temporary closure of the airspace over Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) today, October 16, 2025. The closure will be in effect from 10:26 AM to 12:26 PM.
“The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) announces a temporary, closure of the airspace over Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) today, October 16, 2025,” read the statement.
“The closure will be in effect from 10:26 AM to 12:26 PM.”
JKIA Airspace Shut Down
KAA stated that the essential measure is being undertaken to facilitate enhanced security rescreening operations following the arrival of the remains of the late Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga, former Prime Minister of Kenya.
The safety and security of passengers, staff, and all airport users remains KAA’s highest priority, and this action reflects the Authority’s commitment to maintaining the highest security standards.
Passengers with flights scheduled during this period are strongly advised to contact their airlines for updates on flight statuses and any adjustments to travel itineraries.
The Kenya Airports Authority stated that it regrets for any inconvenience this necessary operation may cause and thanks the public for their patience and cooperation.

KQ203 Reaches Kenya Airspace
Earlier, the body of the late Raila Odinga reached the Kenya Airspace at around 8:50am and landed at JKIA at 09:30am.
To honour Raila, Kenya Aiways changed KQ203 to RAO001 as soon as it reached the Kenyan Airspace.
“KQ203 will change to RAO001 as soon as we reach the Kenya Airspace at around 8:50 am to honor and respect our departed leader. ETA at JKIA is 09:30 am,” said Kenya Airways.
The temporary renaming of one of its flights, has been seen as a mark of respect and solidarity with the nation in mourning.
Additionally, the change serves not only as a tribute but also as a reminder of the late Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga’s contributions to the country.
By temporarily altering the flight number, Kenya Airways joined the nation in mourning, underscoring the airline’s role in connecting communities during pivotal moments in Kenya’s history.
