Gospel Singer Mary Claire Hospitalised After Suspected Acid Attack

A gospel singer in Kenya is recovering in hospital after an acid attack that left her with severe burns, as police investigate a suspected coordinated assault.

The victim, Mary Claire, is affiliated with Redemption Ministers. She was attacked last week while walking home with her friend, Sarah Watere. According to eyewitnesses, a man approached carrying a container of corrosive liquid and threw it at her face before attempting to escape. A second suspect was reportedly waiting nearby on a motorbike to aid the getaway.

Members of the public intervened and prevented the escape. The motorbike rider fled, leaving the alleged attacker behind. The suspect was restrained and beaten by the crowd. During the incident, his phone rang, and witnesses say the caller asked whether the “job” had been completed when the call was answered on loudspeaker.

Watere described the immediate effects of the attack, stating that Claire’s clothing began to disintegrate due to the chemical burns. She recalled Claire asking for water to wash her face as she struggled with the injuries.

Claire was taken to Kenyatta National Hospital, where she remains under treatment. Her condition has led to widespread concern, with calls for accountability and stronger action against acid attacks and gender-based violence.

Police have arrested the main suspect, who is being held at Kibera Police Station and is expected to face charges. Investigators have also detained Claire’s alleged former boyfriend after the suspect claimed he had been sent to carry out the attack.
