German Embassy Nairobi Announces New Round of DAAD Scholarships for Kenyans

The German Embassy in Nairobi has announced a new round of DAAD scholarships for Kenyan graduates, offering fully funded Master’s programmes across Sub-Saharan Africa.
Applications close on 29 April 2026. The scholarships form part of the DAAD In-Country/In-Region Scholarship Programme, which supports postgraduate education within Africa. The initiative is designed to strengthen local expertise and align academic training with development priorities and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Successful applicants will study at selected universities in countries including Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, South Africa, Malawi and Burkina Faso. The programme focuses on expanding access to quality education while encouraging practical solutions to regional challenges.
Available courses cover engineering, natural sciences, agriculture, social sciences, and public and environmental health. These fields are considered essential for addressing issues such as climate resilience, food security, and healthcare systems.
Applicants must search the DAAD database for eligible programmes, register on the meindaad portal, and submit a complete application. Required documents include a CV in the German format, a motivation letter of up to three pages, certified academic certificates, proof of language proficiency, and recommendation letters from former lecturers.
Some universities combine admission and scholarship applications, while others require separate submissions. The programme is open to graduates and postgraduates from Sub-Saharan Africa who hold a first degree. It encourages applications from women and individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Successful candidates will receive monthly stipends, full tuition coverage, and annual research allowances. In some cases, additional funding may be available for research stays abroad, subject to a separate application.
Kenyan institutions, including St Paul’s University, have shown improved performance in international rankings, indicating increased competitiveness in higher education. The scholarships aim to support the development of skilled professionals who can contribute to sustainable growth across the region.
