Gachagua Rejects Duale Debate Challenge, Says He Will Face Ruto Only

Rigathi Gachagua has rejected a challenge from Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale for a live televised debate, insisting that he will only engage President William Ruto in a presidential contest set for next year.

In a statement issued on 12 February, Gachagua, leader of the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), dismissed Duale’s proposal, labelling it unworthy of his political stature. He said that he does not debate Ruto’s “employees,” focusing instead on preparing for a direct presidential debate with Ruto.

Gachagua also suggested that ministers should concentrate on drafting the president’s “talking points” for the upcoming contest. Duale had issued the challenge the previous day during the NYOTA event in Garissa, accusing Gachagua of failing to address the development issues in Northern Kenya.

The Health CS questioned Gachagua’s ability to criticise local leaders given his previous role in government, claiming the region’s lack of progress in education and healthcare had been neglected under his leadership. “I am ready to engage him. Let us meet at Jeff Koinange’s bench. I will challenge you,” Duale said.

The exchange follows Gachagua’s recent comments in which he blamed county leaders in Northern Kenya for mismanaging devolved funds, resulting in shortages of essential services. Duale responded by pointing to the failures of previous administrations, including the one in which Gachagua served.
