From Kericho to Combat Boots: Boreh Anthony’s 20-Year Journey to the American Dream

The Long Road to the Uniform: A Kenyan Diaspora Story of Grit and Destiny
For Army Specialist (SPC) Boreh Anthony, the journey to the American dream was a 20-year detour that finally came full circle on a military base halfway across the world.
Anthony, a native of Kericho, Kenya, recently took the Oath of Allegiance to become a United States citizen—a major milestone in a remarkable transition from corporate retail management in East Africa to wearing the uniform of the U.S. Army at age 42.
A Dream Born on the Base
Military life is in Anthony’s blood. Born at Kahawa Barracks in Nairobi and raised in Nanyuki Barracks, he spent his childhood watching his father, Major Philip Maritim Matingwony, serve as a quartermaster for the 4th Brigade and later as a paratrooper in Gilgil.
“It was always my dream to follow in my father’s footsteps,” Anthony shared.
However, life initially took him down a different path. Boreh built a successful corporate career in Kenya, working as a store manager for the popular Mr. Price clothing chain in Nairobi under Deacons Kenya, and later with Umoja Rubber Products, a shoe company based in Mombasa.
Overcoming the Age Barrier
By the time Boreh immigrated to the United States in 2022, he believed his lifelong dream of military service was out of reach. In Kenya, strict military age cutoffs meant that entering service in his early 40s was not possible.
A chance meeting with an Army recruiter in Seattle, Washington, changed everything. SPC Boreh learned that the U.S. military not only accepts older recruits but also offers robust benefits that made the transition viable for his future.
A New Chapter in Texas
Now stationed in San Antonio, Texas, SPC Boreh Anthony is officially both a U.S. soldier and a U.S. citizen, proving that it is never too late to reshape one’s destiny. Reflecting on his enlistment and his experience so far, SPC Boreh has no regrets.
“So far, the Army has been more than I expected,” Anthony said. “I love it.”
