Former Maseno Teacher Dies Suddenly While Visiting Family in the US

Steve Omondi Jaboma, a veteran Kenyan teacher, died on Tuesday, 7 October, at Baystate Hospital in Massachusetts while visiting family in the United States.
Jaboma’s death is believed to have been caused by an underlying medical condition. He had travelled to the US to reunite with relatives, a visit that ended in tragedy. His passing has been met with widespread mourning from former students, colleagues, and schools where he previously taught.
Jaboma taught mathematics at Maseno School in the early 2000s and later spent four years at Kahawa Garrison Secondary School. He was also a lecturer at the Technical University of Mombasa, serving in the Department of Information and Technology Studies.
Former students have shared tributes on social media, describing him as a mentor and father figure who offered guidance both inside and outside the classroom. “He guided us not just through equations, but through life itself,” one former student wrote.
In a statement, the Maseno School community expressed its condolences and called for support for Jaboma’s children, who are now orphaned following the death of their mother three years ago.
His final public message was a Facebook post on 13 September, featuring a reel of personal photos. Jaboma’s death comes shortly after another case involving a Kenyan, Roselyne Oyaro, who died mid-flight while returning to the United States from visiting family.
