Former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu will remain behind bars after the High Court denied his request for bail pending the determination of his appeal against a corruption conviction.
In an update on Monday, March 3, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) said Waititu, who was sentenced to 12 years in prison or a Ksh53 million fine, had sought bail while challenging his conviction.
However, the court sided with the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), who opposed the application.
“The DPP had urged the court to reject Waititu’s request for bail pending appeal, insisting he was lawfully convicted for corruption-related charges upon which he was sentenced to pay a fine of Ksh53 million or serve the 12 years imprisonment,” the prosecution stated.
Waititu was found guilty of Conflict of Interest and Dealing with Suspect Property offenses, leading to his conviction three weeks ago.
His sentencing followed a graft case in which he was accused of benefiting from irregular county government contracts during his tenure as Kiambu Governor.
The High Court ruling means Waititu will continue serving his sentence at the Industrial Area Prison until the appeal is determined.
Lady Justice Lucy Njuguna has scheduled the next mention of the case for Tuesday, March 18, 2025, when further directions on the substantive appeal will be given.
