Egypt smartphone maker plans to expand into Kenya

According to Reuters, Silicon Industries Corporation (SICO), Egypt’s first smartphone maker has announced its expansion plan to enter seven new African countries; Kenya, Nigeria, Morocco, DR Congo, South Africa, Ghana, Nigeria and Mozambique.

The company says it targets low-income earners with handset prices under $100. It expects to begin exporting the phones by the end of the year or early next year.

“We are still entering the market and talking to people…… We are working with several operators and hoping that [the phones] will be available at their branches at the end of 2018 or early 2019.” the firm’s sales director Ali was quoted by Reuters.

SICO has already established its presence in Middle Eastern markets including the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The smartphone market in Kenya has been rapidly expanding in recent years and is largely dominated by Chinese manufacturers followed by Samsung according to Statscounter;
