Driver of Climax Bus That Crashed with Jirongo’s Car Recounts Last Moments Before the Accident

Tiras Kamau, the driver of a Climax Coaches bus involved in a head-on collision with a vehicle belonging to former Lugari Member of Parliament (MP) Cyrus Jirongo, has recounted the events leading up to the crash.
Speaking to the media on December 13, Tiras said he was driving from Nairobi to Busia when the accident occurred.
Recounting the sequence of events in the tragic crash, Kamau said the Mercedes-Benz involved was exiting a petrol station and entered the highway without giving way.
“I am Tiras Kamau Githinji, a driver with Climax Coaches. I have worked with the company for eight years,” he said.
“The Mercedes was coming out of a petrol station while I was heading from Nairobi to Busia. The car did not give way when joining the road,” he said.
The crash occurred around 3:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 13, 2025, along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway.

Kamau added that traffic congestion prompted Cyrus Jirongo to enter his lane, resulting in the accident.
“He saw that the road was congested and decided to enter my lane. That’s when we collided head-on,” Githinji recounted.
According to Tiras, his bus was carrying 65 passengers. He tried to avoid the collision but was concerned about the passengers and the risk of the bus overturning.
He applied the brakes, but the car still came into his path.
The driver further revealed that he only learned about the identity of the deceased after the police arrived at the scene.
Kamau has worked as a driver with Climax Coaches for eight years.
Police Report on Cyrus Jirongo’s Fatal Accident
Rift Valley Traffic Enforcement Officer Sarah Chumo confirmed that the former KANU Youth Wing Leader died following a head-on collision on the Nairobi–Nakuru highway.
According to a police report from the Naivasha Police Base Commander dated December 13, the accident occurred at approximately 3:00 a.m. when Jirongo’s Mercedes-Benz, registration KCZ 305C, crashed with a bus along the busy highway.
“At approximately 0300 hours on 13/12/2025, a fatal road traffic accident occurred at Karai along the Nakuru-Naivasha Highway. The accident involved a Mercedes-Benz motor vehicle, registration KCZ 305C, driven by Cyrus Jirongo, aged 64, traveling from Nakuru towards Nairobi,” read part of the police report.
The car, according to the police report, was traveling from Nakuru towards Nairobi when it veered out of its lane and collided with an oncoming MAN bus.
The accident left Jirongo with sustained severe head injuries, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
His body was transported to the Naivasha Sub-County Morgue, awaiting autopsy, while the vehicles involved have been impounded for further inspection.
