Christmas Homecoming Ends in Tragedy for KDF Officer in Migori

Police in Migori County are investigating the killing of a Kenya Defence Forces officer whose body was found at her home in Nyahera Village on Christmas Eve.

Lieutenant Cynthia Awuor Mboya, 28, was stationed at Gilgil Barracks and had travelled home for the holidays. Her body was discovered in her bedroom after police responded to a distress report in the early hours of Christmas morning.

Officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations have arrested three close relatives to assist with the investigation. Those in custody are the officer’s husband, his mother and his brother. Police said all three remain detained as inquiries continue.

According to investigators, the deceased had visible injuries when her body was found. Preliminary observations indicated facial wounds and signs consistent with strangulation. A post-mortem examination is scheduled at Migori County Referral Hospital.

Police recovered several items believed to be connected to the incident. These include clothing suspected to have been worn at the time and a machete thought to be the murder weapon. Two mobile phones belonging to the deceased were also reported missing.

The husband told police he had been at his shop in Migori town and returned home shortly after 1 am. He said he found the front door open and his wife lying unresponsive inside the house. Investigators have raised concerns about his account and are treating him as a key suspect.

Suna East Police Commander Samuel Boit said the matter was first reported to local administrators before being referred to Migori Police Station. Detectives later revisited the scene and searched the husband’s shop at Cool Plaza, where a panga with red stains was recovered for forensic examination.

Additional items seized from the home include sweatpants, a sweater, sports shoes and a cap. Police said forensic analysis of the recovered materials is ongoing.

Lieutenant Mboya’s death occurred during a routine family visit.
