Chinese firm says Nairobi-Naivasha SGR 70% Complete

The China Communication Construction Company says it has laid 86 kilometres out of the overall length of 120.49 km of the Nairobi-Naivasha Standard Gauge Railway, signifying a 70 per cent completion.

Acting Managing Director of Kenya Railways (KR), Phillip Mainga says they expect to complete the project by May 31.

“The challenge that we are facing is land acquisition. The work of the government is providing funds to the land predecessors whereas the National Land Commission compensates land,” he said during a press conference.

Meanwhile, the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics had reported that Standard Gauge Railway train service ferried 1.7 million passengers in 2018, an increased figure from mid-2017, when it started, till the end of 2017.

“In 2017, the train transported 699,055 passengers between June and December, with the number rising to 1.67 million in 2018,” the report said.
