“Called to Serve: The 106th Archbishop of Canterbury Vows Calm, Compassionate Leadership in a Fractured World”

The newly appointed 106th Archbishop of Canterbury has described his calling as an “extraordinary and humbling privilege,” pledging to serve with calmness, consistency and compassion as he steps into one of the most recognized roles in global Christianity. He paid tribute to Anglican churches across the United Kingdom and around the world, noting their vital work in bringing healing, hope and practical support to their communities.
Acknowledging that he takes office at a time of deep division, uncertainty and conflict, the Archbishop said his vision is to make the Church a place of genuine encounter, where people of different backgrounds and convictions can “break bread together and discover what we have in common.” He committed himself to a ministry of hospitality, listening and bridge-building, emphasizing that the Church must stand in the gaps of society rather than deepen its fractures.
The Archbishop also underlined his determination to equip the Church to be a kind and safe space for all, particularly for the vulnerable, survivors of abuse, and those on the margins. He framed his leadership around God’s call to justice, equity, peace and care for creation, signaling a renewed focus on social responsibility, environmental stewardship and safeguarding. In doing so, he cast his tenure as not only a spiritual office, but also a moral and pastoral responsibility to serve both the Church and the wider world with integrity and courage.
