Board seeks to approve ‘Made in Kenya’ use
Brand Kenya Board acting Managing Director Floice Mukabana says the authorization process that involves thorough verification is aims at ensuring that only quality products have the mark.
A push for Kenyans to embrace locally made good through the “Buy Kenya, Build Kenya” initiative that encourages patriotism through preference for Kenyan goods over imported ones, has faced quality challenges with some manufacturers accused of not meeting standards.
It is based on this that the Brand Kenya Board wants to limit the use of the “Made in Kenya” mark for certified manufacturers whose goods have undergone a thorough quality verification process.
Mukabana says there is need for Kenyans to change their tune toward locally made products, and the mark will not only be one of the best ways to ascertain origin of goods as well as ascertaining that the goods are of the best quality.
As of now, 100 companies in the country have applied for the mark, and 19 of them have received the nod to adopt the ‘Made in Kenya’ mark.
