Australian Police Probe Death of Kenyan Chef After Crash Injuries Raise Suspicion

South Australian police are investigating the death of a 24-year-old Kenyan chef after determining that injuries he sustained did not match those expected from a car crash.

Caleb Leriano was found dead in the early hours of Wednesday, 11 March, after his car struck an electricity pole in Morphett Vale, Adelaide. Emergency services were called at about 1:30 a.m., but were unable to save him. The collision occurred a short distance from his home.

The incident was initially treated as a routine traffic accident. However, forensic analysis later raised concerns when investigators concluded that Leriano’s injuries were inconsistent with those typically caused by a vehicle collision. Detectives subsequently reclassified the case as a suspected homicide.

Police said Leriano had driven his red BMW to Sapphire Reserve shortly before the crash, where he was expected to meet someone. Investigators believe this meeting may be central to understanding the events that led to his death. Detective Inspector Andrew Macrae said the case had been declared a major crime and that the death did not appear to be random.

Forensic officers and major crime investigators have examined the crash site and nearby properties. Several individuals are assisting police with inquiries. Authorities have also asked members of the public to provide CCTV or dashcam footage from Sapphire Road between 12:30 a.m. and 1:30 a.m. to help establish a timeline of events.

Leriano was a graduate of Kenya Utalii College and had moved to Australia for work in aged care and disability services. His father, Mike Leriano, described him as a cheerful and ambitious young man who had travelled abroad to pursue opportunities in Australia.

The case comes days after the death of another Kenyan student, Edna Mmbali, whose body was discovered in the United Kingdom after she had been reported missing in February.
