An emaciated Kenyatta with his front teeth protruding appears in court at Kapenguria in 1958.

He had been taken out of prison at Lokitaung to testify in the trial of Rawson Macharia.
During the trial of Jomo Kenyatta and other KAU officials in 1952 Macharia told the court, how Kenyatta had forced him to undress before ordering him to take oath by blood.
Macharia would later recant his evidence in 1958, claiming that he had lied in his testimony after being offered money and opportunity to study in Britain.
Following his confession, Macharia was put on trial for perjury and sent to prison. Jomo Kenyatta who was serving his sentence at Lokitaung attended the trial to give evidence.
It was the first time Kenyatta was being seen in public since his trial in 1952. He looked gaunt and weak and walked with a stoop. His teeth were also falling off.
In 1960 , a dentist carried out extensive dental work on him and fitted him with dentures.
