After 13 Years Abroad, Benson Gitau Comes Home to Support Diaspora Investors

Benson Gitau, a Kenyan who spent over a decade in the United States, has returned home and is now working in real estate to support diaspora investment in Kenya.

In 2011, Gitau was living in Nairobi and working as a security guard, with limited prospects for advancement. His circumstances changed when he won a US green card through the diversity visa lottery, giving him the opportunity to relocate.

After moving to the United States, he enlisted in the US Marine Corps. His service included deployment to Afghanistan, where he encountered the realities of armed conflict. Alongside career stability and progression, his experience also involved the psychological pressures associated with military service.

Following more than 13 years abroad, Gitau chose to return to Kenya. He described the move as a deliberate decision to redefine his priorities and apply his experience in a local context.

He has since entered the real estate sector, focusing on advising Kenyans in the diaspora who want to invest in property and other ventures at home. His work centres on helping clients avoid common risks, including fraud and poorly structured investments.

Through his work, he supports efforts to link diaspora resources with local development. His role combines business with guidance, offering practical support to individuals seeking to invest in Kenya.
