2,700km Police Chase Ends in Arrest Over Kenyan Man’s Death in Australia

The death of 24-year-old Kenyan national Caleb Leriano in Adelaide is under investigation as a suspected homicide, with fellow Kenyan Allan Kiplimo, 22, now in police custody.

What was first reported as a car crash in Morphett Vale last week was soon treated as suspicious by police. Investigators launched a search across nearly 3,000 kilometres of the Australian Outback before locating Kiplimo. He was detained and extradited to Adelaide, arriving under police escort on Monday for questioning.

Leriano’s family has described deep grief following the news. His father, David Leriano, told Australian media that his “heart [is] broken into pieces.” Relatives in the United States also expressed shock. His cousin, Consolata Lekisaat, based in Washington State, said the loss had deeply affected the family and described Leriano as hopeful about his future.

The case has unsettled Kenyan communities in Australia. Many migrants depend on close social networks for support in unfamiliar environments. The fact that both the victim and the suspect are Kenyan nationals, and were known to each other, has added to the distress.

South Australian authorities are working to establish the events leading to Leriano’s death. Investigators are examining forensic evidence, timelines, and the relationship between the two men. The state’s homicide units have experience handling such cases and have previously used methods such as forensic genealogy to resolve investigations.

Data from Crime Stoppers South Australia shows that most murder cases in the state are solved, with around 10 percent remaining unresolved each year. In most cases, the victim and the offender know each other, a pattern that appears relevant in this investigation.
