My Vision for Matuga - Nicholas Zani for Matuga Constituency

Political networks and community based activities with emphasis on:
- Wealth creation w.r.t. -the "wananchi",
- Superior education standards,
- Employement at middle level to top management,
- Gender equality,
- Water, roads, electricity and telecommunication development,
- Security enforcement,
- Tackling child prostitutiion,
- Drug abuse.
Interests:
My interest is political (to serve as MP for Matuga constituency) and this is elucidated in the vision for Matuga below and supported by my family background.

Introduction:

The people of Matuga live in poverty, barely surviving from subsistent farming. As a result most go hungry for days …with no hope for the next day or vision for coming months. Jobs are lacking because of bad inconsiderate leadership and political / industries mismanagement. Thus, the sugar, bixa and dairy industries have collapsed. The story is endless and pitiful for other sub sectors. Moreover, the only thriving Tourism industry has little to show in local’s economic empowerment. I intend to use funds from the Central Government (esp. CDF) and donor funding at NGO level to initiate Co operative Societies or out growers Companies to stir growth in the agricultural sector, namely, Matuga Development Trust (MaDeT). The market is readily available in the Tourism Industry (which incidentally had a Turnover of 62 billion last year and South Coast contributed heavily into this basket). The hotel industry consumables include, daily, from morning: fresh juice, milk, bread, jams, fruits, eggs and different varieties of meat. This creates Juice Processing, Dairy, Bakeries, Fruit / Jam Processing, Chicken breeding and beef/ “cattle ranching” industries. These are before 10 am daily consumables.
Fresh fish farming, bee keeping, forestry / lumbering, vanilla cultivation coffee and tea are areas which have also have known potential! I could go on and on for the rest of the day consumables to weekly to annual; thus, unimaginable trade volumes which the locals cant access now.

Operation:

The Trust will form - in consultation with Location ‘Wazee, kina Mama and Vijana” -
‘Chama’ (cell) from which choice of industry will be decided on with my guidance. Recall, I am a proficient Construction Engineer / Project Manager.

Through aforementioned proposed funding I shall set up the business in consultation with requisite professionals. Proficient managers will be hired to man the Cells at location level. They shall manage the production, storage/ processing, transportation and marketing of produce and ultimately payment to farmers.

Other Areas:

Matuga & Kubo Markets:
I shall initiate agricultural markets at strategic spots to facilitate marketing produce.

Matuga Utalii College:

I shall initiate a college to train the youth so as to qualify easily for the readily existing jobs in the Hotel industry.

Roads Infrastructure:

Only one road has is tarmac, since independence. I shall push for the construction of the Dongo Kundu road construction which shall also open up many areas to economic development. I shall push for construction of new roads in both Matuga and Kubo Divisions.

Education:

I shall set up a Matuga Education Trust and source for funding from educational trusts well wishers and donors to provide a kitty for incentives to lure top notch lectures and professional to tutor at our secondary and primary shall, empowering them to hustle for top Universities/ Schools.

Others:

I shall also look into issues of water supply, land adjudication, rural electrification, security concerns, women / youth programs, child prostitution / drug abuse, housing and telecommunication installation.

THIS IS MY VISION FOR MATUGA …SHOULD YOU HAVE SUCH A VISION …THEN ENPOWER ZANI.. AND I SHALL DELIVER!

MY FAMILY BACKGROUND

The Zani family has been a pillar for the Digo community for time in memorial. We have been the vital campaign machinery for past members of parliament from independence to date. In fact, no member of parliament has succeeded elections without blessings from the Zani Welfare group. I am a leading member and activist of the association. I also got endorsement by the local ‘Wazees’ on 30th June 2007.

Over the years the late Cllr. Masumbuko Zani and the late Mr. Zachariah Zani (my late father) have been involved as land activists for our people who ended in settlement of our people on crown land in the location that has come to be known as Golini. The advocacy included funding legal battles. Several Zani Welfare group members have since been councilors and activists since. Members of the Zani Welfare group, then as now, have been instrumental in relief food operations for the community during serious draught and famine.

As Teachers Service Commissioner, Mr. Zachariah Zani was instrumental in employment of teachers and sorting ort grievances for our people; a fact that endeared him to the local people. This together with his progressive nature having started off as a humble herdsman to pay his school fees, but regardless made it to the all prestigious Alliance school, Makerere university and Hull universities. He later served for years as teacher, tutor and Headmaster to most prominent coastal personalities. He co-authored the “Masomo ya Msingi” books, turning the Zani name into a coastal and country brand name in the 1980s. He had a shot at politics in 1969 but unfortunately lost narrowly but our people pressured him for every election since then but died in 2002 at a time when he was contemplating to offer his candidature for Member of Parliament as per the wishes of the electorate, including the current Member of Parliament. The fore going is the genesis of my popularity on the ground. This is the mantle I have taken and shall take my people to “the promised land.”

Mrs. Tereza Zani (my mother) was a teacher/ Tutor by profession and co-author of “Masomo ya Msingi” was involved in Maendeleo ya Wanawake organization and has represented the region internationally she has links to women groups that empowered our communities by building residential units. She studied at Nairobi University and Hun University and ploughed back empowerment to the community. She is my mother and offers valuable information to my campaign and strategy.

I have 2 sisters, Elizabeth Zani-Oremo a marketing Manager and Dr. Agnes Zani a lecturer who is a lecturer with a PhD in Gender from the prestigious Oxford University. Dr. Agnes Zani advocates gender sensitivity to our daughters and mothers in Kenya in general and at the coast in particular. She is a fruit of Zani Welfare Group advocacy.

My paternal Grand father late Mr. Chingoro Stephen Zani was an icon the society. He was the first Digo Evangelist and donated the land and built the first church in Vyongwani village my father was instrumental in re-building the modern church on the same grounds. From here Christianity has spanned the constituency to all corners. On the other hand the rest of my paternal grand fathers kept the Islam faith and offer Islam guidance with some been sheikhs including the point men in my campaign team. We are religiously tolerant.

The Zani family which originates from Dundu my great grand father spans the constituency to virtually every corner and in fact into Likoni Msambwani and Kinango constituencies. Politically, we form a voting bloc which every politician seeking elective parliamentary office has tapped into since independence! Actually virtually all past and present Mps have their campaign machinery dependent on the Zani Welfare Group. I have since taken over the campaign machinery and moreover brought in other dormant “campaign machines” that had gone idle due to voter apathy.

Over the years the Zani Welfare Group Members span the constituency and District have been the giants shoulders on which all parliamentary aspirants have stood on to propagate then to win. We inhabit every corner of the constituency and beyond. We have monopolized campaign management since 1963 to date. The group among others has given me their support and as such I have an elaborate existing network at my disposal which is already on high gear.

The Zani family is arguable the largest family among Constituency and even District. The late Zachariah Zani (my father) was a household name and favourite to run in 2002. His philanthropy works and authorship of the “Masomo ya Msingi” series of books make the name Zani literally a brand name. That is entry level mileage because most constituents are suspicious of aspirants who they can not relate to their ancestry.

I already have campaign base at my house Golini Village, Kwale. The numerous Zani welfare Group members have also formed numerous cells (at house holds) from which we operate.

Moreover, I efficiently run a construction company where my project management skills have sharpened. My planning and information gathering skills shall be used to the maximum.

I am patron to numerous social groups. I am a leading member of the Zani Welfare Group which has afforded bursaries to needy students and advocated educating our children, especially the girl child. I have served as Hon Secretary to my church. In addition, I am the Managing Director of a construction firms and have also served as Assistant Engineer and Head of Project Management for a construction company that was developing petrol stations for a multi-national company.

I have been actively involved in promoting democracy, human rights and ultimately the second liberation, I campaigned heavily for the later disillusioned NARC dream. At the coast level I have hosted numerous brains storming as to the trampled on Mijikenda and Coast people and inhabitants hence we embraced the “Bomas Draft” I consequently lobbied many to vote against the “Kilifi Draft”. In fact I moved around with a copy of the “Wako draft” and did not hesitate trash it at every opportunity.

I am a corrupt free leader committed to achieving a corrupt – free Kenya and strongly advocate for personal, social and work ethics as the foundation for that journey. Recall after the 2002 elections Kenyans exercised a citizen’s arrest to a traffic policeman who was bribe- taking. That is the hope and desire to eradicate corruption we have to restore among the citizens, again. I am committed to be part of the engine that will bring that to fruition.

I have the capacity, energy and passion to inspire ideology, be the agent to transformation to conclusion yet humble myself to the views of the people and or party government I serve as servant of the people.

My involvement in politics and construction project management has enhanced my team player attitude. As leader position I have been tolerant to listen to varying ideology and viewed such with an open mind to assess practicability and sense. To be a leader at the constituency level team player attitude is a must and I have professed such. As project manager team player is key to service deliver and hence can affirm to “playing as a team” as a norm.

I profess leadership beyond tribe, race, sex or religion. I am Digo but my mother is Giriama. My sisters married to a luo and the other to a luhya. I have Kambas, Kikuyus et al in -laws and as a consequence, I am conditioned to see beyond tribal orientations. Furthermore, most of my friends are from across the tribal and racial structure.

I do not profess sex biased leadership and most of my campaign managers and “Think Tank” are ladies who I value remarkable. I am a practicing protestant Born Catholic, having a father (late) who was born Anglican and died Catholic, had a grand father who was Anglican but whose father was Muslim; evidently, I am religiously unbiased and psychologically conditioned to be tolerant to varying religious back grounds.
I am committed patriotism, and profess nation hood and unity of the Kenyan people, our people, as elucidated in the National Anthem:

“Ee Mungu Nguvu yetu,
Ilete baraka kwetu,
Haki iwe ngao na mlinzi,
Natukae na undugu amani na uhuru raha tupate na ustawi”

“Natujenge taifa letu,
Ee ndio wajibu wetu,
Kenya istahili heshima,
Tuungane mikono pamoja kazini
Kila siku tuwe na shukrani”

“Amkeni ndugu zetu,
Tufanye sote bidii,
Nasi tujitoe kwa nguvu,
Nchi yetu ya Kenya tunayo ipenda tuwe tayari kuilinda”

Yes I am a Patriot!

Affirmative action is necessary for the correction of historic injustices. I strongly believe in affirmative action

I have an existing net work in the constituency which we have been sharpening further and are mounting a successful parliamentary campaign. This is the Zani Welfare Group. Several members are from The Zani family which originates from Dundu my great grand father spans the constituency to virtually every corner and in fact into Likoni Msambwani and Kinango constituencies.

Moreover, I efficiently run a construction company where my project management skills have sharpened. My planning and information gathering skills shall be used to the maximum.

I have the requisite capabilities to serve my constituents and the country at large. Vote for Zani, Vote for Patriotism, leadership and maendeleo"

Thank you for your attention and good will.

GOD BLESS MATUGA..GOD BLESS KENYA!!

About Me:
I have a passion for servitude;thus, ventured into politics. My life history is best depicted in the following capability statement and family back ground.

Life History:
I contested the Matuga Parliamentary seat on a NARC (NGILU) ticket & managed 5th position from field of 13 as much as I campaigned for weeks only! With the ODM Chairman Kwale (Mr. Mwinyi Mwacheruphe) I was major in campaigning for the Presidential Candidate H. E. Raila Odinga in Kwale in particular & Coast in general. It was an properly planned and managed campaign ever witnessed. We posted upto 12 spots per day on several radio stations to campaign for Hon Raila in addition to printing his posters and distributing tens of thousands of fliers. Furthermore, our rallies were orchestrated with sound modern equipment to preach the gospel of Hon Raila.

My exposure as the Managing Director of a construction company, the responsibilities when General Manager of a chain of companies and qualification as a graduate Technician Engineer (studied Civil Engineering – Construction, specializing in Water & Irrigation, at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology) and currently studying a M.Sc. in Operations and Supply Chain Management ( a combo of MBA in Strategic Operations and an MSc in Supply Chain Management), have all given me the necessary experience, technique, confidence and knowledge to undertake and capably execute senior management assignments. I have managed numerous construction works and was previously employed as an Assistant Site Manager/ Engineer and Head of Project Management for a construction company. My responsibilities in the areas of: planning and estimating, job administration, costing and labour management have prepared me to give guidance and direction in Matuga development, which I shall blue print.

I am proficiency in management duties(MSc 2010)which included: Strategic operations management, Supply chain management, Business analysis and assesment and logistics. These, have all made me capable of effectively directing management of CDF, LAPF or CESS funds. Furthermore, I have valuable links to donor funding for NGOs.

I have had the following technical based responsibilities: realisation of projects right from the soliciting of the jobs to the handing over of the finished works; leasing amongst clients, consultants, civil sub-contractors, third party suppliers and transport contractors; assessment and preparation of reports on decorative and structural defects; quoting and supervision of civil engineering works; machinery and manpower planning & administration; adherence to weekly completion of works targets and the corresponding trouble-shooting.Hence, I can plan & advise, effectively, on development of infra structure.

As the Managing Director of my company, I am involved in tender negotiations and construction review meeting with Consultants and Developers.Hence, I am conversant with Management practices, operations & responsibilities.
